Each year since 2010 WordPress has released a new default theme. This year the new theme “Twenty Twelve” is about to be launched and I have been previewing it. I have found it very impressive. The code is very high quality code which makes it easy to work with and adapt. The default design is straightforward and very attractive. The design is responsive and looks great on all types of device.
As in the screenshot, by default, the theme has no header image, which is a change from the previous two themes.
The theme settings do allow the insertion of a banner image though. But this looks wrong to me, I think that banner images belong at the top, not halfway down the page.
I wanted to switch to Twenty Twelve on this site, so I had to change that for our theme by moving the block of code which displays the image. This was very straightforward, but I also needed to change the height of the image from 250 pixels to 150 pixels which requires some slightly more complex work on the theme functions.

Aside from that, I wanted rounded corners for the page, but that and our standard set up of the configuration was all took to refresh our site with the latest and greatest WordPress theme.
Our revised version of Twenty Twelve will be available to our customers as a base theme as will the original. I think it makes a great basis for any site design, be it for business, personal, a portfolio or a blog.
There is a demo of the unmodified Twenty Twelve theme along with a full description of the theme’s features on the theme’s own page at WordPress.com.
